    Glad I saw this video. Someone gave me an Oase filter and I've just modified it to the best of my ability and been using it accordingly. But now I want this instead. 2 things... I think you should just finesse the sponge over the heater directly and leave it be. I don't think it will melt/burn under water. Also to cut rigid plastic with that type of pipe cutter, apply a tiny amount of pressure with the blade of the pipe cutter then turn the pipe over and over. You may even apply extra pressure as you turn. Of course if it's a hard to replace piece you should still play it safe and use a diff. method. But it works wonders - I have the same type of cutter.

    You may have a different name for it in England but what you want to use to seal the fittings is called pipe dope among American plumbers. British plumbers probably have some other name for it, but in America we call it pipe dope. That is probably going to provide the best seal. I can see how Vaseline would help, but you might as well use a product that is actually made for ceiling threaded fittings. It's very cheap.

    I used an Eheim professionel 4+ 350 and an Oase Biomaster 600T. For my 325 liter super heavily planted, heavily stocked aquarium, the Oase is far the best because I have a lot of small leaf litter that is picked up by the prefilter. I want to be able to clean the prefilter weekly because excess plant waste will cause Black Beard algae. With the Oase this is a 5-minute job, with the Eheim, you need to disassemble the filter which takes 30 minutes. Also, the filter material of the Eheim is extremely hard to clean as plant waste gets stuck in the rough matrix. With the Oase it is just a case of squeezing and rinsing the sponges under the tap (yes tapwater because the biological media sits in the filter). Not having to remove the filter head is a huge timesaver for me. So, it boils down to whether you want (need) to clean your prefilter often, in case needed, go for the Oase.

    I want to know more about this air diven system. I built my first Palidarium this year. It is awesome. The plants are doing great. I have shrimp, springtails, and dairy cow isopod. But the water pump has been a pain in the butt. I wish I had seen this beforehand. I'm kind of curious why you didn't do this in a foam board structure that was the dimensions of the inside of the tank? You might have a small gap from the thickness of the board. But I feel like that would have been fixable with silicone. Besides that, the only thing that would have done different is put crystals in the cave. Stocking choices are good. 😊

    • @AquariumShed
      @AquariumShed 13 днів тому

      Ha. I was asking myself the same question as soon as it started to go wrong..... I think maybe a foam structure would have bulged and expanded too much, but I was thinking that a plywood structure that could easily be unscrewed would have been the answer. You live and you learn! Thanks for watching. Really pleased you liked the project!

    this was quite interesting. have you considered doing this for a longer time scale and checking the root growth as part of the final analysis? on short term, i dont think just the visual appeal of the plants aesthetic is super indicative of its long term health and viability.

      @AquariumShed 14 днів тому

    I’ve redone my last air driven aquarium with your hybrid gravel filter (even though it was probably the most stable aquarium I’ve ever had). I’ve just turned it into a fancy hidden sponge filter with a rock wall and a fern and Calanthea planted behind a rock wall coming out of the water. However my cheap air pump never had much volume, but is now on its last legs. Can I ask how much airvolume your pump uses for the waterfall?

    • @AquariumShed
      @AquariumShed 13 днів тому

      Hiya. It's slightly difficult to know the precise air volume - I'm using a Medo LA-45C attached to a air ring as a documented in this video - ua-cam.com/video/1jS4PNTH9Mc/v-deo.htmlsi=ZucRg6dO6xFmctPN - so the total air volume is difficult to say. I'm currently running five aquariums off of the air ring and release excess pressure so it's not nearly at capacity. I would say tho, that I think my old Eheim Air 200 would easily have powered this waterfall. Sorry not to be more helpful. 👍

    • @ksaandor
      @ksaandor 12 днів тому

    i am curently trying out the yeast method simply because my tank really needs co2 and i cant afford a real setup for now. i hope it keeps me afloat for 2-3 months so i can safe up. what i will probably do, and it depends on where you live but here probably the most efficient way to do pressurized co2 is to buy all the gear you need like normal but then you get an adapter for the bottle and put those co2 bottles in you buy for sodastreams to make soda at home. you can get them everywhere. every supermarket has them and one of the bottles lasts roughly 3-4 months. and once its empty you just trade it in for 5 bucks on your weekly grocery shopping. its literally the exact same than big co2 bottles with the difference that you dont have to pay like 100-200 upfront for the bottle and its super convenient to change

    I have used a drop checker... and used a good quality liquid pH test kit at the same time, to test the water pH values Oddly, the pH of the water tests virtually the same with the liquid test kit (I am hard-pressed to see any difference), despite the drop checker colour fluctuating - even when the drop checker is bright yellow! I don't bother with drop checkers anymore: I look at the condition of the fish, shrimp and the plants... The plants are lush and the fish/shrimp are lively. The shrimp are breeding like crazy - I have absolutely no idea how many are in that tank now... there are a lot): that is my monitoring system. My filtration and water movement are both quite powerful. I think that is what keeps the whole thing well balanced? The C02 system is a fairly beefy homemade yeast/sugar system which runs 24/7, with two reagent bottles that get exchanged alternately to provide a reasonably stable level of co2 injection (in terms of bubbles per second).

    how deep does the hang over types have to dip into the water? and does it make a difference?

      Hiya. As long as the end is fully submerged so no atmospheric air can get in it doesn't matter what depth it sits at. Cheers.

    I like to have my CO2 come on quite a bit earlier than the lights and I always keep good surface agitation to reduce the chances of harming the fish by keeping oxygen levels and CO2 levels high. This does inevitably waste some CO2 from off gassing at the waters surface.

      I do exactly the same with the surface agitation. As long as you can get a cheap enough supply of CO2 I think it's worth it! 👍

    Thanks for this video. I stopped using my drop checker once my co2 levels stabilized & I got a digital pH meter too. But lately my co2 needle valve isn't working right and my co2 is swinging around. This has given me the push to get my drop checker back out. The pH meter probes are expensive and keep getting overgrown with black algae.

    How do you connect the solenoid to a timer?

      Personally, I plug it in to a smart plug. Altho a manual plug socket timer will work just fine as well! 👍

    I had a similar idea. My next tank is going to be cheesy retro fun combined with live plants. Great video!

    A better way to do this experience would have been to use it as a bottom layer beneath an active clay based substrate and then see how the plants grow.
